Reliability of antibiotics supply in Germany

August 4, 2017

Is "Made in EU" a realistic option for the reliability of generic antibiotics supply in Germany? Our study examines the situation, given the dependence on API (Active pharmaceutical ingredient) imports from non-EU countries.

Antibiotics are produced in three fundamental steps – Generation of intermediates, transformation into APIs and drug formulation. For decades, the production of intermediates and APIs has been gradually relocated to non-EU countries. The price pressure remains. AN efficient production of (generic) antibiotics is only possible through cost savings in the production. Thus more than 80% of the processed intermediates and APIs are imported. There is a clear dependence on non-EU producers.

Unfortunately, the dependence on imports of intermediates and APIs leads to supply shortages of (generic) antibiotics in Germany. On the one hand, there is an increasing concentration of foreign producers, especially in China and India. On the other hand deficiencies occurring in production plants abroad directly affect antibiotic manufacturers in Germany.

A reconstruction of the local production decreases the dependence on imports and safeguards the continuous supply of antibiotics Find the details in our study.
